MIAMI DADE OFFICIALS CUT PAY TO LOWER COSTS
Many left the annual Miami Dade County School Board meeting last week whey they elected to give up 10 days of pay in order
to help lower Miami health insurance costs while helping the district keep admin costs down. During the same meeting, Superintendent Mr. Alberto
Carvalho noted he would reduce nearly $29,000 in benefits compensation. He also didn't tke a salary raise, but rather
offered the money to the many of the district's foundations for many of the new education initiatives to come.
He was quoted, "If we're asking for a collective sacrifice, mine ought to be bigger than anyone else's,'' Carvalho noted.
Majority of the board members decided to decrease 10 days of pay because the district offices are closed for the holiday season.
The board Vice Chairwoman Perla Tabares Hantman, asked many of the board members to take away some of their pay earlier this year and
was very pleased by the outcome of the board meeting.`She said, "You lead by example,'' ``We are here in a very difficult financial time.''
Most district employees, strangely, will see their dollars in compensation increase for the new year.
Miami health insurance board voted to change the cost of all health insurance for many of the key employees like,
principals, assistant principals and district administrators. This will reduce the overall medical insurance costs in Miami.
This change will not increase the average pay increase given to Miami teachers, which was about 2 percent.
The nearly dozen members of Mr. Carvalho's cabinet -- the dozen highest-ranking schools officials -- turned down the compensation adjustment.
``It was the people in the field who really needed it,'' Deputy Superintendent Freddie Woodson noted. ``It was the right thing to do.''
In other Miami health insurance business, the board:
They appointed a new interim Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief by the name of Charles Hurley as the permanent chief of police in Dade county.
Mr. Hurley began his career as interim chief in the summer of 2008, when the previous Chief Gerald Darling took a new job in Memphis.
He is a 15-year department veteran and holds a master's from Barry University in Miami Shores.
Over the past year, Hurley helped streamline business operations while maintaining police officers in schools.
Mr. Hurley called the new position a privilege.``We've come a long way," he noted.
"The department, for the first time in a long time, is financially solvent. Crime is down in schools. Philosophically,
the men and women of the police department understand in what they do, and we truley believe in them."
Carvalho called Hurley's style of leadership "student- and community-centric."
"He earned it," Carvalho noted of Hurley's new large promotion.
Mr. Hurley will not receive an increase in his salary, which is currently over the six figure mark of, $115,805.
