Controversial Pooling of Health Insurance
Miami, Florida — Medi-Share, a Christian based organization with members across the country, equates the program with building a barn. If one family can build a barn in 10 years, 12 families working together can build it in one weekend. The group uses the concept of pooling insurance resources to pay medical bills for its members. Members pay a very reasonable rate and meet a small deductible, and then have their health insurance needs met. It is beneficial to most people, but the organization has lost a law suit when it failed to pay for a member’s heart surgery. Some states have outlawed the program, as it works in a similar fashion to insurance companies, but is not subject to the same laws and regulations. However, it still oprates in many states today with some 400,000 members. What do you think about organizations such as these? Should they be legal?
