Expansion of Florida Health Insurance
In 2005, Governor Jeb Bush initiated a pilot program which granted the state of Florida $1 billion in federal funds each year to provide no cost health insurance to the uninsured. However, there was a clause in the program that in order to continue receiving the funding, the program must be expanded by 2011. The penalty would reduce federal funding for Medicaid by $3 million a year unless the program is expanded before the fiscal year of 2011. Previous attempts over the past two years have been defeated by the state Legislature, however they were apparently unaware of the penalty. Now legislative leaders are scrambling to make the expansion happen in order to avoid the loss in funding. Do you think they will succeed?
