Florida Amendment to Possibly Impact More Than Intended

The Florida Marriage Protection Amendment passed with more than enough votes, meaning that Conservatives and Christian groups all made their way out to the polls on Tuesday. While gay marriage is already illegal in Florida, the amendment further banned any type of union between any couples other than man and woman. While this makes the conservative and religious groups happy, it may have unintended consequences for elderly widows who choose not to remarry but who share health insurance benefits and pension. The wording of the amendment may spell the end of health benefits for domestic partners, and could mean that an unmarried person would have no rights to visit their partner in the hospital, as they are not legally family. What other ramifications do you think this amendment may cause? Do you agree with it’s passing?
