The rate of uninsured Floridians is reaching epidemic proportions as more and more people are losing their jobs and their health insurance benefits. Experts fear that the loss of coverage will drive many more people to use expensive emergency rooms for treatment, which will then fall on tax payers and hurt the bottom line of many hospitals who will not be reimbursed for the care. Also, preventative care will often be forgone, meaning a higher occurence of serious diseases which are also more costly to treat and manage. Emergency care clinics are already reporting cases of much sicker children who have been forced to wait until they could not wait any longer to receive treatment. What can be done to keep this problem from causing irreperable damage?
