Florida Health Insurance Reform

Jacksonville, Florida

The GOP controlled Florida Senate overcame a feeble attempt by democrats to kill Attorney General Bill McCollum’s lawsuit against the federal government against Florida health insurance overhaul.

Many of the democrats tried to change a provision onto the bill that would limit all legal fees due to outside lawyers that were hired by the state of Florida attorney general’s office.  Our Senate then passed a bill, a top priority of McCollum’s, and brought it to Governor Charlie Crist’s desk to put into action.

The North Miami Beach Democrat Gelber who want’s McCollum’s job, had given a offer to go through the health insurance amendment. Mr. McCollum’s position is becoming available because he’s seeking the Republican gubernatorial nomination this year.  What do you think about the new government takeover of health insurance in Florida?  Will your taxes get hiked because of it?

Attorney general McCollum filed a federal lawsuit over the health insurance reform in Pensacola, Florida upon Barack Obama signing of the new legislation it into law this week. More than twelve attorneys general from other states have joined the suit.  Is this new healthcare reform overhaul against the constitution?

“This is nothing more than a political frolic,” Gelber said. “He had a press conference every single day on this. It was nothing other than a political issue.”

GOP Republicans came to McCollum’s guard, saying that the lawsuit has brought very consistent constitutional issues. A major aspect of the cases focuses on a requirement for pretty much everyone int he United States to purchase health insurance or get a fine if they do not comply.

“Nowhere in the United States Constitution does it allow or give authority to the federal government to impose demands on the citizens of this state or any other state that they have to buy a certain product of service,” said Sen. Carey Baker, R-Eustis.

Mr. Baker is sponsoring a Florida state constitutional amendment (SJR 72) that would give Floridians the choice to opt out of the health insurance requirement, but it hasn’t yet had a floor vote.  Do you think this is fair?  Should each state be able to set there own rules?  Please let us now what you think today!
