Health Insurance Reform’s Impact on the Industry

President Obama has made the vow to reform the health insurance industry, in part by cutting wasteful spending. Something that may fall into this category of “waste” are agent and broker commissions. Already during his campaign, Obama mentioned how much money is wasted on Medicare Advantage Plans which are offered by major health insurance carriers and involve sales and commissions via agents and brokers. Obama feels that a tremendous amount of money would be saved by eliminating the “middle man” and having Medicare only available directly from the government. If his reform plans continue on their current course and the nation sees the advent of a government run plan, which would cut out the middle man, how are agents and brokers going to adapt to the changing landscape of health insurance?
