Lee Memorial Health Systems at Standstill With United Healthcare
Lee Memorial Health System, which owns the majority of hospitals in Lee County, FL, has sent an ultimatim to United Healthcare. If an agreement cannot be reached by August 31 of this year, their contract will terminate. While the contract termination would only affect hospital based services, meaning that clients would not see any changes as far as primary care goes, United Healthcare members would be paying a lot more to use Lee Memorial Hospitals. Officials are still hopeful that the relationship will not ultimately come to an end, however twelve months of negotiation have yet to produce a satisfactory agreement. Spokespeople from both agencies stated that they were committed to reaching a favorable outcome to maintain the relationship, however disagreements still continue over such issues as reimbursement rates. How will Lee county residents be affected if the majority of local hospitals are no longer available for in-network coverage under their health insurance policy? How will United Healthcare handle the inevitable loss of membership if the contract is not renewed?

Both parties will come to an 11th hour agreement -they have to. UnitedHealthcare has a very large market share in Lee as they have too much to lose. LMHS’s posturing is nothing new. As a near monopoly, they have had multiple run-ins with the FTC with regards to antitrust laws. LMHS and Humana have butted heads for over a decade at contract renewal time, that has always resulted in compromises -yet resolutions.
When they do make an agreement, it certainly won’t be headline news. Good news isn’t news, especially to the derelicts running the News-Press.
