Movement Toward Protection for Autism Sufferers
States are beginning to pass legislation protecting the rights of autism sufferers and their families. Private insurance companies have been known to deny claims for autism treatment including behavior therapy and other types of intensive care that these victims often require. The cost of care can be quite high and leave families at a loss when paying for health insurance which will not reimburse them for these expenses. This is on top of the emotional burden of caring for an autistic child as well as the increased financial burden of needing constant care which can impact a parent’s ability to work and provide income in the first place. Florida is among the states which have already passed legislation requiring insurance companies to cover certain types of therapy, with some of the laws in effect already, and others slated to come into effect within the coming year. How much progress will we see in the care and treatment of autism now that insurance companies are being held accountable for covering this mental illness? What impact will it have on the future coverage of other types of mental and behavioral disorders?
