Palm Beach County School Board Conducts Review
Employees of the Palm Beach Florida County School Board were in for a shock during open enrollment this year when all 21,500 eligible employees were asked to provide documentation proving that their spouses and dependents were legitimate before being allowed to enroll them under health insurance coverage through the school board. Normally during open enrollment, employees are given the option of adding or deleting dependents due to factors such as divorce, age of children, affordability of premiums, and other factors. This year however, employees were asked to provide marriage certificates, birth certificates, and other formal documentation to prove legitimacy. This was done without warning, in the hopes of cutting costs by preventing many people from being able to provide proof. Was this an underhanded attempt to save money, or a valid way to prevent fraudulent use of school board funds?

It was definitely an attempt to save money but at the same time preventing fraud. If the world was the same today as it was a couple years ago, this probably would never have happened.

Why would any employer insure an illigitimate dependent? It is kind of the flip side of why any doctor would file a Medicare claim for a patient they did not treat.
