School Board Employees to Pay for the First Time

In Orlando, FL, employees of the Orange County public school district are feeling the effects of drastic cuts and the resulting tightening of the budget. For the first time ever, employees will have to pay a contribution to their health care benefits. Up until this year, school district employees have always been completely covered, but the steady rise in premiums and the strain of the recession have resulted in the need for employees to either contribute towards their premium payments, or pay higher out of pocket expenses. The decision is being made as to which avenue they will go down, or be it a combination of the two. Teachers, who make comparitively low salaries for the work they do, have been compensated with good benefits and other incentives. If there are no longer incentives such as these, will Florida be able to hire and retain enough teachers for our children?
