Small Businesses Feel the Impact of New Tax
While the State Childrens Health Insurance Program will now be able to help a much broader spectrum of needy children receive health care, the tax increase on cigarettes which made the expansion possible is having an impact on small businesses across Florida. The federal tax increase of .62 cents per pack has already slowed sales by 10 to 25 percent as reported by small business owners in the Treasure Cost area. The decrease is expected to be a slow and steady decline, but may be excelerated if Florida decides to pass legislation for an additional tax at the state level which could bring the price up by another dollar per pack. Because Florida ranks very low on the list of taxation for cigarettes, legislators are looking at the benefits of generating money via the tax to cover budget shortages and to provide for additional public health insurance programs. Small business owners, however, are hoping the legislation does not pass as it will have a dramatic impact on cigarette sales. Do you think if Florida passes the higher tax that sales will really drop that dramatically, or will smokers cough up the extra dough?

Sales will slow to the point that the additional tax will be self-defeating as investment, wages and jobs decrease. The State will not receive the anticipated revenues. Underground sales will spike. It will reduce the income of the buyes. And, the needy kids will have been disappointed.

I’m sure they will cough up the extra dough.
