While there are currently millions of Americans without health insurance, in Florida alone roughly 20% of the population has no health insurance and a quarter of its working population is without health insurance. There are six million more uninsured workers today than there were a little over a decade ago. This is a dangerous situation for many to be in. People often put off preventative care and non-life threatening treatments, only to face more severe and expensive problems down the road. Massive medical bills have become one of the leading causes of personal bankruptcy, and the government is burdened by all of the people who need assitance in receiving care. Hospitals suffer when people have to use the ER because they have no alternative, and then are unable to pay their bill. It has become a massive problem, and one of the biggest issues of the recent presidential campaign. Will this problem be resolved sometime in the next few years, or will it reach proportions that our country is unable to handle?
