The Price of Obesity

Being overweight can cause a litany of well documented problems such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer. However, the cost to your health is not the only cost you will likely pay if you tip the scales in the wrong direction. For people trying to acquire an individual health insurance policy, the height to wait ratio is one of the key factors in the underwriting decision making process. People who don’t fall within the “healthy” range of height to weight will other find themselves automatically declined, or else subject to extremely high premiums, exclusions, and limitations. For group policies in large companies, having someone overweight in the pool of employees will raise the cost for everyone, resulting in the documented evidence that overweight workers receive lower wages than their fitter coworkers. The recent health and fitness fad may have more to do with appearance, but it should have more to do with protecting your life and wallet. Will Americans win the battle of the bulge and help bring health care costs back down, or is our fast food scoiety doomed to be forever oversized?
