When the Doctor Becomes the Patient

While it is unfortunate that former AMA president Ron Davis has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, his ability to see both sides of the equation may be beneficial to the health crisis at hand. A preventative health specialist who was diagnosed in February and is undergoing cheomtherapy, spoke on both sides of the issue at University of Florida recently. He stressed to young doctors the importance of not losing sight of the crucial doctor patient relationship and wants medical professionals to provide their patients with education and information regarding their condition and treatment. He spoke of the AMA’s recent proposal for reform and focused not on his own illness, but on addressing the problems of having close to 50 million Americans without insurance and the shortcomings of the current health care system. Do you think it is important to have more people on the medical side of the fence speaking out in favor of reform?
