Who is Responsible for your Health?

Lewisville congressman Michael Burgess was looking for a fight when he headed to South Florida into Democratic territory to defend presidential nomineee John McCain’s health care reform proposal. The only Texas lawmaker to speak up in his behalf, Burgess seems to be in a minority of conservatives in favor of McCain’s plan. Burgess, who is a physician, became the only doctor on the core health care policy team. He advocates McCain’s view that health insurance is a personal responsibility, not an unalienable right. Obama’s view is that the government must provide for all citizens, while McCain feels that people need to be accountable for their own health care and that the government should not coddle people and provide for their every need. Do you agree with Burgess and McCain, that people should be personally responsible for their health and insurance needs, or should the government be in control of mandating that everyone have coverage?

    I think there is a balance. Government should provide a way and people should be responsible.

    What a loaded question! The Declaration of Independence says: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Does that include the unborn?
